Accommodation registration for foreigners in China
This is one of the easiest rules for travelers to miss. Hotels usually handle it; non-hotel stays require more attention.
Quick answer
When foreigners stay in hotels in China, hotels register accommodation information according to hotel public-security rules. For stays in domiciles other than hotels, the foreigner or the host should complete registration with local public security organs within 24 hours after arrival. NIA has introduced online accommodation registration for non-hotel stays, piloted from March 20, 2026 in seven provincial-level regions.
What to do by accommodation type
Bring your passport. Ask the front desk to register your accommodation. Keep the hotel address in Chinese.
Ask the host before arrival how foreigner accommodation registration is handled locally.
Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing, and Sichuan are listed as initial pilot regions for online registration.
Call 12367, ask the local police station or exit-entry service window, or ask your host/hotel to help.
Online registration channels
NIA says accommodation hosts or foreigners may access the NIA Government Service Platform, including the official website, NIA 12367 app, NIA 12367 WeChat mini program, or Alipay mini program. After registration and identity verification, users can follow the accommodation registration module prompts and view records.
Common mistakes
- Assuming “Airbnb-style” stays work like hotels.
- Leaving registration to the last day of the trip.
- Using an address that the host cannot verify.
- Changing accommodation without asking whether re-registration is needed.
- Forgetting that failure to register may lead to a warning or fine under applicable rules.
