Accommodation registration for foreigners in China

This is one of the easiest rules for travelers to miss. Hotels usually handle it; non-hotel stays require more attention.

Quick answer

When foreigners stay in hotels in China, hotels register accommodation information according to hotel public-security rules. For stays in domiciles other than hotels, the foreigner or the host should complete registration with local public security organs within 24 hours after arrival. NIA has introduced online accommodation registration for non-hotel stays, piloted from March 20, 2026 in seven provincial-level regions.
